Digital Photography
Digital photography was born 40 years ago on a blackboard. Egan Visual was only 2 years old at the time or it probably would have been on one of our whiteboards!
| Willard Boyle and George Smith are the co-inventors of the charge-coupled device (CCD). The CCD made it possible to create digital images which has evolved into applications like the digital camera, astronomy's Hubble Telescope, medical imaging and anywhere high resolution digital imaging is required. According to Boyle and Smith: "...the idea for the device was born while sketching up possibilities [for a picture phone] on a blackboard at Bell Labs in October 1969." They were awarded the Nobel Prize for this exceptional idea in December 2009. See Original Story (Image: Video Telephony in 1910 as imagined in 2000.) |
